Titled Death and the Maiden, in reference to Schubert’s song of the same name—whose beautiful theme is taken up in the slow movement—this famous string quartet was orchestrated for string ensemble nearly a century after its composition by Gustav Mahler, who further intensifies the drama through the addition of double basses, deepening the work’s sombre sonorities.
