With Ô… Where Do the Streams Flow, Erik Orsenna makes fresh water his heroine. From source to estuary, across mountains, forests and plains, water reveals its journeys and its poetry. Lively, rhythmic, luminous and powerful, it tells the intimate story between humankind and nature. This fresco inspired composer Orlando Bass to write a richly textured melologue for eleven instruments and a narrator. His music follows the impetuous rush of a mountain torrent before unfolding into the meanders of a majestic river. The sound textures successively evoke the trickle of a washhouse, the steady pulse of a turbine, and the deep rumble of a ship, within a fluid aesthetic in which prosody, music and rhythm are subtly interwoven. This work will be preceded by Schubert’s Trout.
